Business
Ellington Financial Inc. (NYSE: EFC) is a diversified real estate investment trust that acquires and manages mortgage-related, consumer-related, corporate-related, and other financial assets, including residential and commercial mortgage loans; residential and non-Agency mortgage-backed securities; reverse mortgage loans through its Longbridge segment; collateralized loan obligations; consumer loans and asset-backed securities; mortgage servicing rights and forward MSR-related investments; non-mortgage and mortgage-related derivatives; debt and equity investments in loan origination companies; and other strategic investments such as U.S. Treasury securities. The company operates primarily in the United States and Europe through its two main reportable segments: the investment portfolio segment, which focuses on a broad array of financial assets, and the Longbridge segment, which originates and services home equity conversion mortgage (HECM) loans insured by the FHA, proprietary reverse mortgage loans, and home equity lines of credit for homeowners aged 62 or older. Ellington Financial qualifies as a REIT for federal income tax purposes and intends to distribute at least 90% of its taxable income as dividends to shareholders; it is externally managed and advised by Ellington Financial Management LLC, an affiliate of Ellington Management Group, L.L.C. Founded in 2007 and headquartered in Old Greenwich, Connecticut, the company targets attractive, risk-adjusted total returns for shareholders through an opportunistic investment strategy across its credit, agency, and Longbridge businesses. Its credit portfolio includes non-qualified mortgage (non-QM) loans and retained RMBS; residential transition loans and other residential mortgage loans; commercial mortgage bridge loans; home equity lines of credit and closed-end second lien loans; CLOs; CMBS; consumer loans and ABS; corporate debt, equity, and loans; and equity investments in loan originators, with an adjusted long credit portfolio of $3.56 billion as of September 30, 2025. The Longbridge segment reported record proprietary reverse mortgage loan originations in the third quarter of 2025, driving portfolio growth to $750 million excluding non-retained securitization tranches, supported by wholesale, correspondent, and retail channels. In recent developments, Ellington Financial significantly expanded its long-term, non-mark-to-market financing by pricing seven securitizations in the third quarter of 2025 and a total of 20 year-to-date, more than triple the prior year's pace, including plans for its inaugural residential transition loan securitization. On September 30, 2025, it priced $400 million of five-year senior unsecured notes rated by Moody's and Fitch, which closed shortly thereafter at a 7.375% yield, increasing unsecured recourse borrowings to nearly 20% and enhancing balance sheet stability. These moves, alongside a recourse debt-to-equity ratio of 1.8:1 and unencumbered assets exceeding $1 billion as of quarter-end, reflect a strategic shift toward greater proportions of securitization and unsecured financing from shorter-term repo, bolstering liquidity and dividend coverage.
