Business
Electra Battery Materials Corporation engages in the development and operation of battery materials refining facilities and mineral exploration properties focused on critical minerals for lithium-ion batteries in North America. The company owns and operates North America's only fully permitted hydrometallurgical cobalt refinery, which produces battery-grade cobalt sulfate; advances black mass recycling for recovering lithium, nickel, cobalt, graphite, and copper from end-of-life batteries; explores the Iron Creek cobalt-copper project and surrounding land package in Idaho's Cobalt Belt; and evaluates opportunities in nickel sulfate and precursor cathode active material production. Electra Battery Materials targets electric vehicle manufacturers, battery producers, and energy storage industries with low-carbon, ethically sourced materials, operating primarily in Canada and the United States. Founded in 2011 and headquartered in Toronto, Ontario, the company, formerly known as First Cobalt Corp., rebranded in late 2021 to reflect its expanded focus on refining and recycling. Recent developments include signing a Supply Chain Cooperation Agreement in November 2025 with Positive Materials Inc. to integrate cobalt sulfate with pCAM production in New Brunswick; advancing construction of its cobalt sulfate refinery through major tenders; securing C$5 million in June 2024 from Natural Resources Canada for battery recycling; and progressing an Indigenous-led recycling venture with Three Fires Group in June 2025.
