Business
Emera Incorporated, headquartered in Halifax, Nova Scotia, Canada, and founded in 1998, operates as a geographically diverse energy and services company investing in regulated electricity generation, transmission, and distribution as well as gas transmission and distribution across North America and the Caribbean, serving approximately 2.6 million utility customers through six electric and natural gas utilities. The company generates electricity via natural gas, solar, hydroelectric, coal, and biomass power plants; transmits and distributes electricity and natural gas; and provides energy marketing, trading, and asset management services, with key subsidiaries including Tampa Electric (Florida Electric Utility), Nova Scotia Power (Canadian Electric Utilities), Peoples Gas, and others organized into segments such as Florida Electric Utility, Canadian Electric Utilities, Other Electric Utilities, Gas Utilities and Infrastructure, and Other. Emera maintains 1,977 MW of installed renewable capacity and has achieved a 49% reduction in CO2 emissions since 2005 while focusing on decarbonization, decentralization, and digitalization trends. In recent developments, Emera unveiled a $20 billion five-year capital plan through 2029 in November 2025, with nearly 80% allocated to Florida for grid modernization, reliability enhancements, renewable integration, and technology updates supporting 7-8% rate base growth; sold its New Mexico Gas Company subsidiary to Bernhard Capital Partners in 2024 to optimize its portfolio and reallocate capital to high-growth markets; and completed its Peoples Gas rate case in 2025 alongside strong third-quarter adjusted EPS growth driven by Tampa Electric performance.
