Business
Enzo Biochem, Inc. (ENZ) is a life sciences company specializing in labeling and detection technologies for genomic, protein, cell, and tissue analysis. The company offers a comprehensive portfolio of over 6,000 proprietary products, including antibodies, genomic probes, immunoassays, biochemicals, proteins, dyes, and labeling kits; these tools support applications in translational research, drug discovery, drug development, cell biology, genomics, immunohistochemistry, small molecule chemistry, and nucleic acid detection. Enzo Biochem also provides custom manufacturing services, GMP services, assay and validation testing, and licensing of its technologies, serving academic researchers, biotechnology firms, pharmaceutical companies, and diagnostic manufacturers worldwide through offices in the United States, Switzerland, Germany, France, the United Kingdom, and Benelux regions. Founded in 1976 and headquartered in Farmingdale, New York, the company operates primarily through its Enzo Life Sciences division, leveraging over 500 patents, in-house U.S. manufacturing, and a workforce with more than 25% PhD scientists to deliver rigorously validated, high-sensitivity products cited in over 175,000 publications. In June 2025, Enzo Biochem entered into a definitive merger agreement to be acquired by Battery Ventures for approximately $37 million, or $0.70 per share in cash, following a strategic review by a special committee of its Board of Directors; the take-private transaction was completed in August 2025, transitioning the company to private ownership under Battery Ventures to support accelerated innovation, R&D investment, market expansion, and targeted acquisitions. Concurrent with the acquisition, veteran life sciences executive Jason Apter joined as Group CEO, backed by Battery partners on the board including Justin Rosner, Jesse Feldman, and Alan Hirzel. In fiscal year 2025, the company launched approximately 100 new products per quarter amid life sciences sector challenges, reported sequential revenue improvements to $7.3 million in Q2, and maintained focus on cost containment and product lifecycle maintenance.
