Business
Erie Indemnity Company (ERIE), founded in 1925 and headquartered in Erie, Pennsylvania, operates as the managing attorney-in-fact for the subscribers of the Erie Insurance Exchange, a reciprocal insurance exchange; it provides sales, underwriting, policy issuance, and administrative services to the Exchange, which offers property/casualty insurance products including private passenger automobile, homeowners, commercial multi-peril, workers' compensation, and personal umbrella policies, as well as life insurance and annuity products through affiliated entities. The company supports operations across 12 states and the District of Columbia in the midwestern, mid-Atlantic, and southeastern United States through a network of over 14,000 independent agents and more than 7,000 employees, serving standard and preferred risks in personal lines (primarily auto comprising the largest segment), commercial lines, and life segments; it generates revenue primarily through a management fee based on premiums written by the Exchange, supplemented by administrative reimbursements. Recent developments include maintaining the 25% management fee rate for 2025 as approved in late 2024, alongside dividend increases; Erie Strategic Ventures, the company's venture capital arm launched in 2022, expanded its portfolio in October 2025 with investments in Atomic, a full-stack brokerage platform for embedded financial services, and Feathery, an AI-driven data intake workflow provider, building on prior investments in insurtech startups such as Wagmo, Roots Automation, and Trust & Will; ongoing innovations encompass a new billing platform, Business Auto 2.0 product launch, telematics and usage-based insurance enhancements with $5.6 million invested, and geographic expansion of workers' compensation coverage to additional states including Delaware and Vermont.
