Business
Essity AB (publ) is a leading global hygiene and health company that develops, produces and sells personal care, consumer tissue and professional hygiene products and solutions to consumers, professionals and healthcare providers worldwide. Headquartered in Stockholm, Sweden, and founded in 2017 as a spin-off from Svenska Cellulosa Aktiebolaget (SCA) with roots tracing back to 1849 through the Mölnlycke acquisition, Essity operates in approximately 150 countries with around 36,000 employees and reported net sales of EUR 13 billion in 2023. The company structures its business into segments including Health & Medical, which encompasses incontinence products like TENA, baby care such as Libero diapers, feminine care including menstruation pads and leakproof apparel from brands like Knix and Modibodi, and medical solutions covering wound care, compression therapy, orthopedics and advanced technologies; Consumer Tissue offering toilet paper, household towels, facial tissues, handkerchiefs, wet wipes and napkins; and Professional Hygiene providing away-from-home solutions such as paper hand towels, dispensers, hand soaps, sanitizers, cleaning wipes under the Tork brand and service maintenance. Essity maintains strong market leadership in incontinence products globally, significant positions in baby and feminine care, and ranks among the largest suppliers of consumer tissue and professional hygiene products. In recent developments, Essity announced a major organizational restructuring in October 2025 to enhance profitable growth, splitting its Consumer Goods area into Personal Care and Consumer Tissue while establishing four standalone business areas—Health & Medical, Personal Care, Consumer Tissue and Professional Hygiene—each with end-to-end accountability for innovation, production, marketing and sales, effective January 1, 2026, alongside a SEK 1 billion annual cost-savings program by end-2026; the company also entered an agreement in November 2025 to acquire Edgewell Personal Care’s feminine care business in North America, including brands Carefree, Stayfree, o.b. and Playtex globally, for USD 340 million to bolster high-margin categories and U.S. market positions. Earlier changes include the full divestment of its 51.59% stake in Vinda International Holdings in March 2024 for approximately SEK 19 billion and exit from Russian operations in July 2023 for SEK 1.2 billion, with prior acquisitions such as Knix and Modibodi in 2022 strengthening leakproof apparel leadership.
