Business
Exxaro Resources Limited is a diversified mining and renewable energy company primarily engaged in the production and supply of thermal, semi-soft coking, and metallurgical coal; pigment manufacturing including ferrosilicon powder; iron ore mining; and renewable energy solutions. The company operates predominantly in South Africa with additional activities across Europe, Asia, and other international markets. Founded in 2000 and headquartered in Centurion, South Africa, Exxaro is recognized as one of the largest black-empowered resource companies in South Africa, serving markets such as Eskom and other domestic and offshore customers. Exxaro's core mining operations focus on coal extraction in the Waterberg and Mpumalanga regions, supplying various types of coal that support electricity generation and steelmaking. Its renewable energy portfolio, managed through its wholly-owned subsidiary Cennergi, includes wind and solar power generation assets, with a current capacity of around 229 megawatts. The company also engages in diversified equity investments related to energy transition metals and other critical minerals. Recent major developments include the strategic acquisition of majority stakes in two fully operational renewable energy assets: the 138MW Gouda Wind Farm in the Western Cape and the 75MW Sishen Solar Facility in the Northern Cape, acquired from Acciona Energía. This move aligns with Exxaro’s commitment to energy transition and sustainability, substantially expanding its renewable energy capacity. Additionally, Exxaro completed a significant acquisition of Ntsimbintle Mining, a South African manganese mining company, representing a $630 million investment to diversify beyond coal into critical minerals essential for steelmaking and battery technologies. These acquisitions mark a strategic shift toward cleaner energy solutions and minerals critical to global energy transition while maintaining its strong coal base. Exxaro operates in multiple business segments including mining (coal, manganese, iron ore), pigment manufacturing, and renewable energy solutions. Its customer base spans utilities, industrial sectors, and international markets. The company prioritizes sustainability, community engagement, and operational excellence in its growth strategy, supported by partnerships with entities such as Ritluka Resources Pty and Modi Mining. Under the leadership of CEO Ben Magara, Exxaro is advancing toward its goal of reaching 1.6 GW renewable energy capacity by 2030 and positioning itself as a leading diversified natural resources company in Africa and beyond.
