Business
Freeport-McMoRan Inc. (FCX) operates as a leading international mining company primarily focused on copper production, with significant operations in gold and molybdenum; the company explores, mines, processes, and sells copper cathodes, copper concentrates, gold, and molybdenum from large-scale, long-lived assets including the Grasberg minerals district in Indonesia, the Morenci minerals district in North America, the Cerro Verde operation in Peru, and other sites across North America, South America, and Indonesia. Incorporated in Delaware in 1987 and headquartered in Phoenix, Arizona, FCX maintains geographically diverse reserves and production facilities serving manufacturers in electrical products, construction, transportation, industrial machinery, and alloy production; its segments encompass North America copper mines such as Morenci, Bagdad, Safford, Sierrita, and Miami in Arizona, Tyrone and Chino in New Mexico; South America operations including Cerro Verde in Peru and El Abra in Chile; Indonesia operations via PT Freeport Indonesia (PT-FI) featuring the Grasberg block cave underground mine; molybdenum mining at Climax in Colorado and Henderson in Colorado; and downstream activities through Atlantic Copper smelting and refining in Spain and rod and refining operations. The company traces its roots to predecessor entities dating back to 1912 with Freeport Sulphur Company and key mergers including the 1981 formation of Freeport-McMoRan Inc., the 2007 acquisition of Phelps Dodge, and the 2014 name simplification from Freeport-McMoRan Copper & Gold Inc. Recent developments include plans announced in November 2025 to restart large-scale production at the Grasberg minerals district, nears an agreement to divest a 12% stake in its Indonesian unit amid discussions for post-2041 mining rights extensions with the Indonesian government, and pursues designation of copper as a critical mineral in the U.S. to address supply challenges.
