Business
Federal National Mortgage Association (FNMA), known as Fannie Mae, provides liquidity, stability, and affordability to the U.S. housing market as a government-sponsored enterprise by purchasing mortgage loans from lenders, guaranteeing eligible mortgage-backed securities, and issuing debt securities to fund its operations. The company offers multifamily housing mortgage loans and securities; single-family mortgage loans and guarantees; credit risk transfer products; and technology solutions including the Desktop Underwriter and Desktop Originator underwriting systems, as well as the Singlefamily Seller/Servicer Guide and Multifamily Seller/Servicer Guide. Fannie Mae operates primarily in the United States, with headquarters in Washington, D.C., where it was founded in 1938 as part of the New Deal to expand homeownership opportunities. In recent developments, the company has continued its strategic efforts under conservatorship, including expansions in affordable housing initiatives and credit risk management programs amid ongoing discussions regarding privatization and release from federal oversight following President Trump's reelection. Fannie Mae maintains subsidiaries such as Fannie Mae Multifamily Holdings and focuses on serving lenders, investors, and renters in the residential mortgage sector.
