Business
Cranswick plc produces and supplies premium fresh and added-value food products to UK grocery retailers, foodservice operators, and other food producers in the United Kingdom and internationally; its core offerings encompass fresh pork, added-value pork, gourmet sausages, bacon and gammon, pastry products, cooked meats including slow cook and sous vide items, fresh and prepared poultry, charcuterie, olives and antipasti, houmous and dips, and pet food utilising British-sourced ingredients. The company operates through segments including Fresh Pork, Convenience encompassing cooked meats and Continental products, Gourmet, Poultry, and Pet Products, with a vertically integrated farm-to-fork model featuring pig and poultry farming, genetics, breeding, feed milling via Crown Milling and Elsham Milling, primary processing at four facilities, and 19 added-value sites across the UK; it supplies major retailers such as Tesco and Sainsbury's, the wholesale and foodservice sectors, and exports to Europe, the United States, South East Asia, and China. Founded in 1972 by East Riding of Yorkshire farmers initially as Cranswick Mill for pig feed production and headquartered at Cranes Court, Hesslewood Office Park, Ferriby Road, Hessle, England, HU13 0PA, Cranswick employs over 15,400 people and generated revenue exceeding £2.7 billion in the year ended 29 March 2025. Recent strategic developments include the £24 million acquisition of JSR Genetics in early 2025 to enhance pig genetics and indoor production self-sufficiency, now approaching 55 per cent in British pigs with nearly 1 million pigs on the ground; the £32 million acquisition of Blakemans on 16 May 2025, a leading foodservice sausage manufacturer complementary to its gourmet business; the acquisition of Fridaythorpe Mill in 2025 to bolster feed milling; a 10-year sole supply agreement with Sainsbury's for fresh pork, sausages, premium bacon, and cooked meats; extension of the Tesco Sustainable Pig Group; and record £138 million capital investment in capacity expansions such as Hull pork processing to 50,000 pigs weekly, poultry sites in Hull and Suffolk, and the Worsley houmous facility. These initiatives drove 6.8 per cent revenue growth to £2,723.3 million, 14.0 per cent adjusted operating profit increase to £206.9 million, and strengthened supply chain resilience amid UK pig herd contraction and poultry welfare transitions.
