GATX Corporation leases railcars, locomotives, aircraft spare engines and tank containers to customers worldwide. The company, founded in 1898 and headquartered in Chicago, Illinois, operates primarily through GATX Rail North America and GATX Rail Europe; it maintains a diverse fleet that includes tank cars for acids and specialty chemicals, boxcars for paper products, lumber, forest goods, canned goods, packaged industrial goods and food products; open-top hoppers and gondolas for aggregates, limestone, gravel, coal, petroleum coke, wood chips, scrap metal and steel coils; and flatcars, intermodal and specialty intermodal railcars. GATX offers full-service and triple-net leasing options, maintenance services through its network, fleet management solutions including RailPulse tracking technology, customer trainings and industry advocacy. The company serves industries such as chemicals, petroleum, agriculture, food and transportation across North America, Europe and India. In May 2025, GATX formed a joint venture with Brookfield Infrastructure Partners, acquiring approximately 105,000 railcars from Wells Fargo Rail for $4.4 billion, with GATX holding an initial 30% equity stake and an option to increase to 100% over time; in September 2025, GATX Rail Europe agreed to purchase about 6,000 freight railcars from Deutsche Bahn, further expanding its European fleet.
