Business
Grupo Financiero Banorte, S.A.B. de C.V. (GBOOF) operates as one of Mexico's largest financial services holding companies, providing universal banking and a comprehensive range of financial products and services through its subsidiaries including retail and commercial banking under the Banorte and Ixe brands; savings accounts, checking and deposit accounts; credit and debit cards including payday loans and RappiCard; mortgages, auto loans, personal loans, payroll loans, SME loans, and commercial and corporate loans; government financing; insurance products; pension funds and retirement savings through its leading AFORE XXI Banorte; brokerage services; mutual funds; leasing via Arrendadora Banorte; and factoring and warehousing services. Headquartered in Monterrey, Nuevo Leon, with additional presence in Mexico City, the company traces its origins to 1899 when its predecessor Banco Mercantil de Monterrey was established, and maintains nationwide operations across approximately 1,269 branches and over 7,000 ATMs in Mexico, supplemented by deposit access through more than 5,200 commercial establishments such as drugstores and supermarkets, as well as limited international activities in southern Texas, New York, and Grand Cayman. Banorte serves retail consumers, SMEs, corporations, and government entities as Mexico's third-largest banking group by assets, second-largest provider of government and mortgage loans, and largest AFORE administrator, with total assets exceeding 1.6 trillion Mexican pesos as of recent fiscal years. In recent developments, Grupo Financiero Banorte completed the acquisition of full ownership of RappiCard in April 2025 through a $50 million agreement to purchase the remaining 44.28% stake in joint venture partner Tarjetas del Futuro, strengthening its digital credit card offerings with a 15-year exclusive commercialization commitment within the Rappi app ecosystem and aligning with its hyper-personalization and cross-selling strategy. The company is pursuing the divestiture or merger of its digital bank Bineo, launched in 2024, to optimize its digital banking operations following lessons from the venture, as indicated in its Q1 2025 and Q3 2025 earnings discussions amid a consumer lending surge including 16% credit card portfolio growth and 10% overall loan expansion excluding government loans. Additional strategic moves include a planned extraordinary dividend distribution of approximately 6.99 pesos per share representing 35% of 2024 net income, investments such as MX$741 million to expand its Monterrey contact center creating 2,800 jobs, and recognition as Mexico's Best Retail Bank and Best Corporate Governance by World Finance for 2025, while posting strong Q3 2025 results with 20% insurance growth and a capital adequacy ratio of 22.3%.
