The company, founded in 1999 through the merger of state-owned entities Centrala Produktów Naftowych and Petrochemia Płock and headquartered in Płock, Poland, processes crude oil into unleaded gasoline, diesel fuel, LPG, biofuels, aviation and marine fuels, heating oils, and jet fuel; produces petrochemicals including aromatics such as phenol, benzene, paraxylene, purified terephthalic acid, benzene-toluene fraction, and naphthalene concentrate, olefins, polyolefins, base oils, lubricants for cars, motorbikes, trucks, marine, industrial, and agricultural applications, paraffin, solvents, bitumen, and industrial salts; generates and distributes electricity and heat from conventional, renewable sources like solar photovoltaics, onshore and offshore wind, biogas, and biomethane, as well as natural gas exploration, production, trading, and storage; and manages Central Europe's largest service station network in Poland, Germany, the Czech Republic, and Lithuania, supported by logistics infrastructure including pipelines and storage facilities. Geographically, Orlen maintains refineries in Poland, Lithuania, and the Czech Republic, retail operations in Austria, Latvia, Estonia, Slovakia, Hungary, and beyond, and subsidiaries such as Energa Operator for energy distribution and Kicking Horse Energy for upstream production. Recent developments include the name change to Orlen SA in July 2023; acquisition of two solar PV farms from EDP Renewables Polska in October 2024, expanding renewable capacity by nearly one-third to over 350 MW in solar and 580 MW in onshore wind, alongside ongoing offshore wind projects like Baltic Power (1.2 GW targeted for 2026) with Northland Power; a December 2024 agreement with the European Investment Bank for PLN 900 million to expand energy distribution networks with 830 km of new power lines and renewable connections by 2026; a June 2025 green Eurobond issuance of PLN 2.5 billion for renewables, electromobility, hydrogen, and energy storage as part of a PLN 350-380 billion strategy through 2035 with 40% in low-emission projects; and October 2025 financing of PLN 3.5 billion from the National Bank of Poland for offshore wind expansions targeting 5.5 GW additional capacity.
