Business
Gran Tierra Energy Inc. is an independent international energy company engaged in the exploration, development, and production of oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids primarily in Colombia, Ecuador, and Canada. The company’s core product portfolio includes light and medium crude oil extracted from fully operated blocks in Colombia and Ecuador, alongside natural gas produced as a byproduct of oil extraction or from dedicated gas fields. Gran Tierra employs enhanced oil recovery methods such as waterflooding to optimize production and operates key assets including the Iguana Block in Ecuador and several producing fields in Colombia. The company also develops gas-to-power projects to convert associated gas into electricity, reducing greenhouse gas emissions and operational costs. Founded in 2003 with headquarters in Calgary, Alberta, Gran Tierra has expanded its asset base through strategic acquisitions and partnerships. Recent major developments include the acquisition of i3 Energy plc in October 2024, which added significant reserves and production capacity in Canada’s Western Canadian Sedimentary Basin, positioning Gran Tierra as a larger independent energy producer with diversified geographic operations. In 2025, the company announced the acquisition of GeoPark Ecuador and Frontera Energy's interests in the Perico and Espejo Blocks in Ecuador’s Oriente Basin for $15.55 million with an additional contingent payment, expanding its footprint and leveraging enhanced recovery expertise. Gran Tierra also entered a strategic joint venture with Logan Energy Corp. to advance development in its Montney assets in Canada. Additionally, the company secured a crude oil sale and prepayment package of up to $200 million to strengthen its balance sheet and financial flexibility. Operational highlights in 2025 include record production levels, low operating costs, and ongoing exploration success in Ecuador marked by new discoveries at Conejo and Chanangue prospects. Gran Tierra’s trades on the NYSE American, Toronto Stock Exchange, and London Stock Exchange under the ticker GTE, reflecting its broad international energy presence and integrated growth strategy.
