Business
Great Plains Energy Inc is a holding company primarily engaged in the generation, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity in the Midwest United States, mainly serving Missouri and Kansas. The company's core products and services include electricity generation through coal, nuclear, natural gas, oil, and wind resources, as well as regulated steam services. Great Plains Energy operates through its principal subsidiary, Kansas City Power & Light Company (KCP&L), which delivers electricity to both residential and commercial customers across 24 counties in western Missouri and eastern Kansas, covering approximately 4,600 square miles. Founded in 1882 and headquartered in Kansas City, Missouri, Great Plains Energy historically served nearly half a million residents and was recognized for expanding its energy portfolio beyond traditional sources to include renewable energy. In its business evolution, the company also expanded into wholesale power markets through its Strategic Energy subsidiary. A significant recent development is the 2018 merger of Great Plains Energy Inc with Westar Energy, creating Evergy Inc, a combined entity with an equity value near $15 billion and service to over 2.2 million customers. This merger represented a major strategic shift aimed at enhancing scale, operational efficiency, and savings for customers without acquisition premiums or debt. Post-merger, the utilities under Evergy maintain their existing names and headquarters. In 2025, Great Plains Energy's region attracted new investment with the announcement of a U.S. Department of Energy nuclear pilot project in the Great Plains Industrial Park, Kansas, through a partnership with Deep Fission, signaling ongoing diversification into advanced energy technologies. This pilot involves construction planned for 2026 and aims to advance safer, cost-effective nuclear energy solutions. Thus, Great Plains Energy is positioned as a multi-faceted energy provider with extensive legacy operations in regulated electric utilities, backed by strategic mergers and forward-looking partnerships in innovative energy projects in its core Midwestern markets. It serves a diverse customer base including residential, commercial, and wholesale power customers across its footprint.
