Business
IMAX China Holding, Inc. (HKEX:1970) is an investment holding company principally engaged in providing digital re-mastering and film-based motion picture technologies for IMAX theater systems in Greater China, encompassing Mainland China, Hong Kong, Taiwan, and Macau; it operates through two primary segments, Content Solutions, which includes digital enhancement and remastering of Hollywood, Chinese-language, and other films for distribution across the IMAX theater network, and Technology Products and Services, which encompasses the design, sale, lease, maintenance, installation, and repair of IMAX Systems including advanced projection systems, curved screens, proprietary theatre geometry, specialized sound systems, after-market parts, and 3D glasses, as well as ancillary activities such as wholesale import of movie theatre equipment, virtual reality displays, related software research and development, and services including business consultation, advertising, ticketing, and publishing agency. Founded in 2010 and headquartered in Shanghai, China, the company serves over 60 exhibitor partners as the exclusive licensee of the IMAX brand and technology in Greater China, where it maintains one of the strongest entertainment brands with widespread consumer loyalty built over more than 25 years since IMAX operations began in the region in 1998; it functions as a subsidiary of IMAX Corporation and focuses on commercial multiplexes, targeting major studios, filmmakers, and audiences seeking immersive cinematic experiences. Recent developments include the expansion of its longstanding strategic partnership with Wanda Film Holding Co., Ltd., China's largest cinema operator, highlighted by a June 2025 announcement to convert up to 27 premium-format auditoriums to IMAX systems and a December 2025 memorandum of understanding to jointly develop merchandise and intellectual property initiatives amid the rising cinema-driven consumer ecosystem; the company also reported a return to profit growth in the first half of 2025 driven by the box office success of 'Ne Zha 2', announced an equity buyback program expiring in June 2025 that repurchased 0.44% of shares, and continues expansion efforts leveraging hits like 'Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle' and 'Zootopia 2' while navigating a recovering box office environment.
