Business
Heron Therapeutics, Inc. (Nasdaq: HRTX) is a commercial-stage biotechnology company that develops and commercializes therapies to advance the standard of care for acute care and oncology patients through its proprietary Biochronomer drug delivery technology. The company offers ZYNRELEF, a dual-acting local anesthetic combining bupivacaine and low-dose meloxicam for postoperative pain management in adults undergoing small- to medium-open surgical procedures via a single administration; APONVIE, an intravenous aprepitant injection indicated for preventing postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) in adults; CINVANTI, an intravenous fosaprepitant for chemotherapy-induced nausea and vomiting (CINV) approved as both a 30-minute infusion and a 2-minute injection; and SUSTOL, a subcutaneous extended-release granisetron injection utilizing Biochronomer technology to maintain therapeutic levels for at least five days for CINV prevention in adults receiving moderately emetogenic chemotherapy or anthracycline plus cyclophosphamide regimens. Heron Therapeutics primarily serves U.S. healthcare providers including surgeons, oncologists, nurses, and pharmacists through a targeted sales force and specialty distributors, with products registered in over 30 foreign countries spanning Europe, Asia-Pacific, and Latin America though commercial focus remains domestic. Founded in 1983 and headquartered in Cary, North Carolina following relocation from San Diego, California, the company recently completed a comprehensive capital restructuring in 2025 that reduced total debt from $175 million to $145 million, secured a senior credit facility of up to $150 million from Hercules Capital due in 2030 with $110 million committed at closing and additional tranches tied to milestones, launched dedicated sales teams for ZYNRELEF and APONVIE in Q3 2025 to drive adoption, transitioned ZYNRELEF to a Vial Access Needle optimizing hospital and ambulatory surgical center preparation, obtained a permanent CMS J-code for ZYNRELEF effective October 1, 2025 to enhance reimbursement, and appointed Brett Fleshman as Chief Business Officer in August 2024 and Thomas Cusack to its board in October 2025.
