- Societatea Energetica Electrica S.A. is a Romania-based integrated energy utility and holding company primarily engaged in electricity distribution, electricity and natural gas supply, energy services, and renewable power generation and storage. Tracing its operational roots to 1898 and established in its modern corporate form in 2000, the company is headquartered in Bucharest, Romania, and trades publicly on the Bucharest Stock Exchange (BVB: EL) and the London Stock Exchange (LSE: ELSA). Electrica operates as the parent holding entity for several specialized subsidiaries, including Distributie Energie Electrica Romania S.A. (DEER), Electrica Furnizare S.A., and FISE Electrica Serv S.A., collectively serving over 3.8 million residential, commercial, and industrial consumers across the country.
The company organizes its principal operations into four core business segments: Electricity Distribution, Electricity and Natural Gas Supply, Energy Services, and Electricity Generation and Storage. Through Distributie Energie Electrica Romania S.A. (DEER), the group manages, operates, and modernizes more than 200,000 kilometers of high-, medium-, and low-voltage electricity distribution lines covering 18 counties across the Transilvania Nord, Transilvania Sud, and Muntenia Nord regions, representing approximately 40 percent of Romania's geographical territory; delivers regulated grid connection and power transmission access; deploys and manages smart metering infrastructure; and executes grid reliability and power quality programs. Through Electrica Furnizare S.A., the company sells electricity and natural gas across the competitive retail market to domestic households and non-household business clients; offers tailored green energy supply packages certified by guarantees of origin; and delivers distributed energy solutions, including turnkey rooftop solar photovoltaic installations, energy auditing, and energy efficiency advisory for prosumers. Through FISE Electrica Serv S.A., the organization provides specialized energy infrastructure engineering and technical services; performs maintenance, overhaul, diagnosis, and repair of electrical network equipment and transformer substations; executes construction-assembly works for power transmission and distribution assets; and provides technical consultancy for industrial electrical installations. Through its power generation division, the company develops and operates utility-scale renewable power plants and battery storage installations.
Under its long-term Electrica 2030 strategy, the group has actively expanded its operational scope from traditional network operations toward renewable generation, energy storage, and smart grid digitalization. Recent major strategic developments include the consolidation of a 60 percent majority stake in Crucea Power Park S.R.L. to build the Crucea Est wind power and storage project, supported by a shareholder-approved investment plan of up to 253 million euros; the commercial commissioning of the 27-megawatt Satu Mare 2 solar park; the advancement of major photovoltaic developments, including the 77.4-megawatt Bihor 1 and 62.5-megawatt Satu Mare 3 solar-plus-storage projects; and the acquisition and development of a battery energy storage system portfolio with approximately 700 megawatt-hours of secured connection capacity. To support inorganic expansion and strategic asset acquisitions across its core operating sectors through 2027, shareholders approved a multi-year financing framework of up to 1 billion euros. In addition, Electrica established a five-year strategic partnership with the Atlantic Council focused on regional energy security and the Vertical Energy Corridor, formed a technology alliance with EsyaSoft for smart metering and storage integration, executed a memorandum of understanding with Liberty Galati for up to 500 megawatts of renewable energy and storage capacity, and implemented an updated corporate governance and sustainability transition roadmap aligned with European CSRD and ESRS reporting standards.
