Business
Johnson Controls International plc (NYSE: JCI) is an Irish-domiciled multinational conglomerate that engineers, manufactures, sells, installs, and services building products and systems, with a focus on smart, safe, healthy, and sustainable buildings; the company operates through segments including Building Solutions North America, Building Solutions EMEA/LA, Building Solutions Asia Pacific, and Global Products. Core products and services encompass heating, ventilating, and air conditioning (HVAC) equipment such as commercial and residential systems, industrial refrigeration units, building management and automation systems including the OpenBlue digital platform, integrated fire detection and suppression solutions like fire alarm control panels, smoke and heat detectors, and battery-powered detectors, security systems including electronic security and smart home solutions, controls software and services, energy efficiency solutions, and technical services such as inspection, maintenance, repair, retrofit, replacement of mechanical and control systems, and energy management consulting. The company serves commercial, institutional, industrial, data center, governmental, healthcare, education, airport, stadium, manufacturing, and other customers across more than 150 countries on six continents. Founded in 1885 by Professor Warren S. Johnson in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as the Johnson Electric Service Company, Johnson Controls International plc is headquartered in Cork, Ireland, following its 2016 merger with Tyco International; it employs approximately 94,000 people globally. In recent major developments, the company completed the sale of its Residential and Light Commercial HVAC business, including the North America ducted business and global residential joint venture with Hitachi Ltd., to the Bosch Group in August 2025 for approximately $6.7 billion in cash, positioning Johnson Controls as a pure-play provider of innovative commercial building solutions and enabling a $5.0 billion accelerated share repurchase program; this transaction, valued at $8.1 billion overall, marks a strategic portfolio transformation with emphasis on recurring revenue, data centers, and services amid operational improvements, Lean initiatives, and a new organizational structure driving margin expansion. Additionally, in September 2024, Johnson Controls announced a major expansion at its Holme heat pump and chiller facility in Aarhus, Denmark, adding 2300 square meters of production capacity, an 1800 square meter customer test center, and modernized equipment to advance sustainable heating and refrigeration technologies for district heating, data centers, food and beverage, and life sciences markets. Earlier, in June 2024, it divested Air Distribution Technologies Inc. (ADTI) to Truelink Capital as part of ongoing portfolio optimization.
