Business
African and Overseas Enterprises Limited is a South African investment holding company operating primarily across fashion retail, commercial property, media and broadcasting technology, and water infrastructure utility sectors. Founded in 1947 and headquartered in Cape Town, South Africa, the company exercises strategic management and holds a controlling interest in Rex Trueform Group Limited, through which it directs the majority of its diversified operational activities across Southern Africa. The company operates through five principal business segments: Retail, Property, Media and Broadcasting, Water Infrastructure, and Group Services. In its Retail segment, conducted primarily through the Queenspark chain of specialty stores and digital retail channels in South Africa and Namibia, the company provides womenswear, menswear, footwear, cosmetics, and fashion accessories; its ladieswear portfolio includes formal and occasion dresses, blouses, tops, tailored jackets, knitwear, skirts, trousers, denim, and plus-size fashion under proprietary labels such as Queenspark Ladies, Queenspark Plus Collection, Cath.nic, and Miss Cassidy; its menswear lines feature tailored suits, casual shirts, jackets, trousers, and knitwear under brands including JCrew and Jonathan D; and its complementary accessory merchandise encompasses footwear, handbags, belts, scarves, and jewellery. In its Property segment, the company holds, manages, develops, and leases a portfolio of commercial, office, and industrial real estate properties, including the Rex Trueform Office Park and distribution center facilities located in Cape Town. In its Media and Broadcasting segment, operated via subsidiary Telemedia Proprietary Limited, the company manufactures, supplies, installs, and supports specialized broadcast and telecommunications infrastructure, delivering satellite uplink and transmission services, microwave links, outside broadcasting (OB) facilities, studio design and systems integration, and radio and television transmission equipment. In its Water Infrastructure segment, the company maintains strategic equity investments in municipal and commercial water utility operations, providing bulk potable water treatment, supply management, and wastewater treatment services through South African Water Works Holdings. In recent developments, the group expanded its telecommunications and media assets in July 2024 by acquiring an additional 25% equity interest in Telemedia Proprietary Limited through Rex Trueform Group Limited, increasing its total ownership to 88.71%. Additionally, effective July 2024, the group entered into a comprehensive two-year strategic and corporate finance service level agreement with Geomer Managerial Services Proprietary Limited running through June 2026 to support operational optimization, mergers and acquisitions, and portfolio growth across its retail, media, and property subsidiaries.
