- City Lodge Hotels Limited (CLH.JO) is a Johannesburg Stock Exchange-listed South African hotel group that owns, operates and manages a portfolio of 58 hotels offering approximately 7,374 rooms primarily for business and leisure travelers. Founded in 1985 by Swiss-born entrepreneur Hans Enderle with the opening of its first property in Randburg (now Bryanston), the company is headquartered at The Lodge in Johannesburg, South Africa, and maintains a leading position among the top 250 hotel chains worldwide through its select-service model emphasizing quality accommodation, homely ambience and efficient service across budget to upscale segments. The group operates extensively in South Africa with properties in every province, complemented by hotels in Botswana (Town Lodge Gaborone), Namibia (Town Lodge Windhoek) and Mozambique (City Lodge Hotel Maputo); it previously held operations in Kenya and Tanzania before divesting those assets in 2022.
City Lodge Hotels categorizes its offerings into four distinct brands: Courtyard Hotel, the upscale luxury brand with five properties and 474 rooms featuring club lounges and premium amenities; City Lodge Hotel, the upper mid-scale brand with 19 hotels and 3,281 rooms providing business traveler-focused facilities like proper desks, lighting and breakfast; Town Lodge, the mid-scale brand with 12 hotels and 1,507 rooms suited for value-conscious stays; and Road Lodge, the economy budget brand with 23 hotels and 2,272 rooms delivering functional, no-frills accommodation. Core services include room accommodations generating the bulk of revenue at around 80%, supplemented by food and beverage operations such as #Café restaurants at City Lodge Hotels, Club Lounges at Courtyard Hotels, and Eat-in à la carte lunch and dinner menus rolled out across all Town Lodge and Road Lodge properties since 2022; ancillary revenue streams encompass conferencing, boardroom hires and miscellaneous services. The group's southern African footprint targets corporate clients, domestic leisure guests and international visitors, with revenue predominantly from South Africa (95.8%) and the balance from Rest of Africa (4.2%), supported by 1,213 employees and strategic locations near airports, business hubs and tourist sites.
In recent years, City Lodge Hotels has prioritized portfolio modernization and sustainability, investing R282.9 million in capital expenditure for the fiscal year ended 30 June 2025, including refurbishments of eight key hotels such as City Lodge Lynnwood, Town Lodge Bellville, Road Lodge N1 City and Durban, Town Lodge George, City Lodge Umhlanga Ridge, and commercial areas at Courtyard Hotel Sandton and City Lodge V&A Waterfront, alongside completion of two additional floors at City Lodge Maputo adding 54 rooms (with 26 more slated for Q1 FY26). The group became debt-free as of 30 June 2025 after refinancing interest-bearing borrowings on improved terms, retaining access to R600 million in facilities maturing over three to five years and R115 million in overdraft capacity; it repurchased and cancelled R30 million in shares during FY2025 and declared steady dividends, including a final payout of 9.00 cents per share for FY2025 and an interim of 6.00 cents for HY2025. Further strategic moves encompass ongoing solar installations at 41 hotels (Phase 3 underway), water resilience initiatives, a refreshed website, technology upgrades, and divestment of City Lodge Katherine Street (closed December 2024, sale for R68 million expected FY2025 proceeds partly for share buybacks); total FY2026 capital commitments stand at R296.6 million for five more hotel refurbishments, achieving a record Level 1 B-BBEE rating through black enterprise support and youth programs, while pursuing selective new-build opportunities in high-growth South African areas amid improving occupancies (up to 63% through early September 2025) and revenue of R2.0 billion for FY2025 (up 3%).
