Business
Metair Investments Limited manufactures, distributes and retails automotive components, energy storage solutions and aftermarket parts primarily across Africa, Europe and select international markets. Founded in 1948 and headquartered in Johannesburg, South Africa, the company operates through two main segments: Automotive Component Manufacturing, which produces shock absorbers, lights, radiators, air-conditioners, suspension parts including coil springs and leaf springs, wiring harnesses, plastic assemblies, brake pads, automotive cables and molded parts; and Aftermarket Parts and Services, which supplies batteries, solar systems, backup and standby systems, charging systems, brake products such as pads, discs, shoes, master and wheel cylinders, and a broad range of auto parts, spares and accessories via retail networks. Its portfolio includes subsidiaries and associates like First Battery and AutoZone in South Africa and Namibia, ATE in South Africa, Rombat in Romania, Associated Battery Manufacturers in Kenya, and Dynamic Battery Services in the United Kingdom, serving original equipment manufacturers, aftermarket distributors, telecommunications, utilities, mining and retail sectors in countries including South Africa, Romania, the United Kingdom, Kenya, Botswana, Swaziland, Uganda, Tanzania and others. In late 2024, Metair completed the acquisition of AutoZone Holdings Proprietary Limited for R278.5 million, adding over 200 retail stores and diversifying revenue through expanded aftermarket distribution in Southern Africa; the company also advanced a comprehensive capital restructuring approved in March 2025 to optimize its debt profile, reduce leverage and support medium-term deleveraging following the disposal of its Turkish battery business Mutlu Akü.
