Business
KALA BIO, Inc. (NASDAQ:KALA) is a clinical-stage biopharmaceutical company focused on the research, development, and commercialization of innovative biologics-based therapies for rare and severe diseases of the eye. The company utilizes its proprietary mesenchymal stem cell secretome (MSC-S) platform to develop product candidates that provide regenerative healing effects for ocular surface and retinal diseases; its lead product candidate, KPI-012, is a topically administered human MSC-S containing numerous biofactors including growth factors, protease inhibitors, matrix proteins, and neurotrophic factors, currently in Phase 2b clinical development for persistent corneal epithelial defect (PCED) with FDA orphan drug and fast track designations, and under evaluation for additional indications such as limbal stem cell deficiency (LSCD) and other rare corneal diseases; its preclinical candidate, KPI-014, targets rare inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) including retinitis pigmentosa and Stargardt disease via intravitreal administration to slow retinal degeneration in a gene-agnostic manner. KALA BIO, formerly known as Kala Pharmaceuticals, Inc., changed its name in August 2023 to reflect its sharpened focus on the MSC-S platform following the July 2022 sale of its previously approved commercial ophthalmic products, EYSUVIS and INVELTYS, to Alcon Inc.; most recently, in December 2025, the company entered into a $6 million securities purchase agreement with investor David E. Lazar, who was appointed CEO and Chairman to lead capital restructuring, product candidate redevelopment, and exploration of strategic alternatives after the Phase 2b CHASE trial of KPI-012 missed its primary endpoint in September 2025; earlier in 2025, KALA BIO completed a $10.75 million private placement and a $1.8 million preferred stock offering to support operations. Founded in 2009 and headquartered in Arlington, Massachusetts, with additional facilities in Menlo Park, California, KALA BIO targets underserved patient populations in the ophthalmology sector across the United States and Latin America through its clinical programs.
