- Dongkuk Steel Mill Company Limited, founded in 1951 and headquartered in Seoul, South Korea, engages primarily in the manufacture and sale of steel products. Its core product portfolio includes pre-coated metal products for home appliances under the Luxteel, Appsteel, and supersmp brands; galvanized steel for home appliances, automotive parts, ducts, soundproof walls, and construction industries; electro galvanized steel for fire doors and receivers; galvalume steel for roofing, walls, pipes, fences, and home appliances; and magnesium alloy galvanized steel for roofing and walls. The company also produces steel plates, DK–LP plates, and clad steel plates used in shipbuilding, marine plants, boilers, pressure vessels, and pipes. For the construction and civil engineering sectors, Dongkuk offers reinforcing, seismic resistant, threaded, and coil reinforcing bars, as well as H-beams, angles, channels, flat bars, F-shape and C-shape profiles, round bars, deformed stiffeners, and DK-deck for road decking. Its manufacturing facilities are located across South Korea in Pohang, Incheon, Dangjin, and Busan.
Recent major company changes include a significant restructuring in 2023 when Dongkuk Steel Mill was spun off from Dongkuk Holdings Co., Ltd., forming an independent entity focused on steel production. In 2024, the company initiated a strategic move towards sustainable manufacturing by collaborating with Tenova Goodfellow Inc. to enhance furnace efficiency at its Incheon plant through the installation of advanced NextGen® technology on a 120-ton AC furnace. Dongkuk Steel also joined the Carbon Disclosure Project as part of its commitment to reducing carbon emissions. The company is leading industry efforts in South Korea for low-carbon steelmaking and hyper-electric furnace technology development to improve power efficiency and reduce operation times. In October 2025, Dongkuk announced the sale of its heavy plate mill in Pohang as part of ongoing efforts to diversify and improve financial strength following its acquisition of Union Steel Co. The company also extended the retirement age for skilled workers to 62 by agreements between labor and management to retain expertise amid industry challenges.
Dongkuk Steel serves both domestic and international markets with applications spanning home appliances, automotive, construction, shipbuilding, marine, and industrial sectors. It is recognized as Korea’s second largest electric arc furnace (EAF) steel producer after Hyundai Steel and maintains a leadership position in safety-specialized steel products including earthquake-resistant reinforcing bars and structurally engineered steel sections. The company continues to introduce premium brands such as D-KOIL, a high-quality coil reinforcing bar, and improve its galvanizing technology to meet evolving market demands. Dongkuk Steel operates under the Dongkuk Steel Group umbrella and leverages its subsidiaries, including Union Steel, to support comprehensive steel production.
