Business
Lithium Americas Corp. (TSX: LAC; NYSE: LAC) develops, constructs and operates lithium projects in North America, with a primary focus on its flagship Thacker Pass project located in Humboldt County, northern Nevada; the company advances lithium deposits through exploration, engineering, permitting, construction and eventual production of battery-quality lithium carbonate via proprietary processing flowsheets validated at its Lithium Technical Development Center in Reno, Nevada. Thacker Pass represents the largest known measured and indicated lithium resource and proven and probable reserve globally, featuring a total nominal design capacity across five phases, an 85-year life of mine and initial production targeted for 2027. Headquartered in Vancouver, Canada, and founded in 2023 following a corporate reorganization from its predecessor entity established in 2007, Lithium Americas operates principally in the United States with exploration interests in Canada. The company owns 59% of the Thacker Pass joint venture, alongside 36% held by General Motors Holdings LLC as the largest shareholder and off-take customer with exclusive rights to Phase 1 production volumes for 20 years, and a 5% stake by the U.S. Department of Energy; Thacker Pass benefits from a $2.26 billion Advanced Technology Vehicles Manufacturing loan at U.S. Treasury rates, supplemented by a $250 million strategic investment from Orion Resource Partners in March 2025 to fully fund construction at both project and corporate levels. Recent developments include construction commencement in early 2023, entry into long-lead equipment purchase agreements, first draw expected on the DOE loan in the third quarter of 2025 enabling final investment decision for Phase 1, and third quarter 2025 results confirming advancement toward production in 2027-2028 to supply the North American electric vehicle and energy storage supply chain.
