Business
Lynas Rare Earths Limited (LYSDY) operates as the world's largest significant producer of separated rare earth materials outside China, focusing on the mining, extraction, concentration, separation, and processing of rare earth minerals for high-technology applications including electronics, electric vehicles, wind turbines, and defense systems. The company produces a comprehensive range of light and heavy rare earth oxides and compounds from its high-grade Mt Weld mine and concentration plant in Western Australia; these include lanthanum, cerium, praseodymium-neodymium (NdPr), samarium, europium, gadolinium, terbium, dysprosium, and the mixed heavy rare earth compound SEGH (samarium-europium-gadolinium-holmium); processing occurs at the Lynas Advanced Materials Plant (LAMP) in Gebeng, Malaysia, with additional facilities in Kalgoorlie, Western Australia. Products serve global manufacturing supply chains in East Asia, Europe, and North America, emphasizing assured provenance from mine to finished materials for customers seeking ethical, non-Chinese sources. Founded in 1983 and headquartered in Perth, Western Australia, Lynas Rare Earths maintains operations across Australia and Malaysia, with a new Rare Earths Processing Facility under construction in Kalgoorlie and plans for light rare earth separation in Texas, USA. In 2025, the company achieved first production of separated heavy rare earths including dysprosium and terbium at its Malaysian facility, becoming the first such producer outside China with capacity for up to 1,500 tonnes per year of heavy rare earths; it also completed expansion at Mt Weld to boost neodymium-praseodymium oxide output by 2,400 tonnes annually. Recent developments include raising A$750 million (US$490 million) through an institutional share placement in August 2025 to fund the "Lynas 2025" and "Towards 2030" growth strategies, encompassing operational ramp-ups, mine modifications, Malaysian plant expansions, and partnerships for downstream metal and magnet supply chains; additionally, Lynas signed an agreement with Malaysia's Kelantan state government to access rare earth-rich ionic clays and entered a memorandum of understanding with Noveon Magnetics for a scalable U.S. rare earth permanent magnet supply chain.
