Business
Caltagirone S.p.A. is an Italy-based diversified industrial and financial holding company engaged in building materials manufacturing, construction and civil engineering, real estate development and asset management, publishing and media, and strategic financial investments. Founded in 1892 and headquartered in Rome, Italy, the company operates across domestic and international markets, maintaining industrial and commercial operations throughout Europe, North America, the Middle East, and the Asia-Pacific region. The company organizes its business operations into four core segments: Building Materials, Media and Publishing, Real Estate and Construction, and Financial Investments. Through its building materials segment, operated primarily through Cementir Holding N.V., the company manufactures, markets, and distributes white and grey Portland cement; ready-mix concrete; mineral aggregates; precast concrete elements; and circular waste management solutions, marketing products globally under recognized trade names including Aalborg Portland and Unicon. Through its media and publishing division, operated via Caltagirone Editore S.p.A., the company publishes leading national and regional daily newspapers, including Il Messaggero, Il Mattino, Il Gazzettino, Corriere Adriatico, and Nuovo Quotidiano di Puglia; produces the free daily and digital news portal Leggo; operates radio broadcasting channels; develops digital content platforms and mobile news applications; and provides integrated advertising and media brokerage services through Piemme S.p.A. Through its real estate and infrastructure segment, encompassing Vianini S.p.A. and specialized property subsidiaries, the company executes civil engineering and infrastructure projects; develops residential, commercial, and logistics properties; and manages a portfolio of income-generating real estate assets across Italy. In its financial investments segment, Caltagirone S.p.A. manages proprietary capital, treasury assets, and significant long-term equity stakes in major Italian public companies, including Assicurazioni Generali S.p.A., Mediobanca S.p.A., and Acea S.p.A. In recent developments, Caltagirone S.p.A. has pursued strategic initiatives centered on sustainability, digital transformation, and capital allocation. The group has advanced its environmental roadmap in the building materials division by scaling the production and commercial rollout of FUTURECEM low-carbon cement technology across Europe and investing in carbon capture, utilization, and storage (CCUS) projects alongside alternative fuel infrastructure. In the media segment, the company has expanded its digital subscription offerings, integrated multimedia content delivery platforms, and optimized print operations to enhance digital revenue streams. Furthermore, the company has continued to actively manage its strategic equity portfolio in the Italian financial sector, participate in key corporate governance processes, and implement structured share repurchase programs to optimize its capital structure and support long-term shareholder return.
