Business
Martin Marietta Materials, Inc. (NYSE: MLM) is a leading supplier of aggregates and heavy building materials to the construction industry. The company produces and sells crushed stone, sand, gravel, and other aggregates from approximately 390 quarries, mines, and distribution yards; cement including Portland and specialty cement; ready-mixed concrete; asphalt and paving products and services; as well as magnesia-based chemicals, magnesium oxide, magnesium hydroxide, dolomitic lime, and other magnesia specialties for industrial, environmental, agricultural, steel production, and soil stabilization applications. Martin Marietta operates through two geographic segments, East Group and West Group, serving public infrastructure, nonresidential, residential, chemical, and railroad markets primarily in 28 states across the U.S., Canada, the Bahamas, and the Caribbean Islands; it maintains headquarters in Raleigh, North Carolina, where it was founded in 1993 as a spin-off from the former Martin Marietta Corporation. In July 2025, Martin Marietta completed the acquisition of Premier Magnesia, LLC, enhancing its position as the leading U.S. producer of natural and synthetic magnesia-based products with operations in Nevada, North Carolina, Indiana, and Pennsylvania. In August 2025, the company entered a definitive asset exchange agreement with Quikrete Holdings, Inc., under which Martin Marietta will acquire aggregates operations producing approximately 20 million tons annually in Virginia, Missouri, Kansas, and Vancouver, British Columbia, plus $450 million in cash, in exchange for its Midlothian, Texas cement plant, related terminals, and North Texas ready-mixed concrete assets; the transaction has secured all regulatory approvals and remains on track to close in the fourth quarter of 2025. These moves align with Martin Marietta's SOAR 2025 strategic plan to optimize its portfolio for higher margins and long-term growth.
