Business
Murphy Oil Corporation (NYSE: MUR) explores for and produces crude oil, natural gas, and natural gas liquids primarily in the United States, Canada, and select international locations; its core onshore operations focus on the Eagle Ford Shale in South Texas, Tupper Montney, and Kaybob Duvernay formations, while offshore activities center on the Gulf of Mexico, including deepwater fields, and non-operated interests in the Hibernia (6.5%) and Terra Nova (18%) fields offshore Newfoundland in the Jeanne d'Arc Basin. The company employs advanced techniques such as hydraulic fracturing and rod lift on onshore rigs, drillships and semisubmersible rigs for deepwater drilling, pump jacks for artificial lift, and floating production systems (FPS) for processing and offloading hydrocarbons in infrastructure-limited areas; produced hydrocarbons are stored onsite or in third-party tanks before transport via pipelines, trucks, railcars, or shuttle tankers to refineries for conversion into gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, petrochemicals, and other end-user products. Founded in 1950 and headquartered in Houston, Texas, following a 2020 relocation from El Dorado, Arkansas, Murphy Oil maintains exploration prospects across 58 blocks in the Gulf of Mexico, as well as in Brazil, Vietnam, and Côte d’Ivoire, targeting global energy markets including refineries, utilities, industrial consumers, and LNG facilities. In March 2025, a subsidiary acquired the BW Pioneer FPSO from BW Offshore for $125 million in a strategic transaction that restructures operations in the Gulf of Mexico, reduces annual operating costs by nearly $60 million with a two-year payback independent of oil prices, boosts net proved developed reserves by approximately 8 million barrels of oil equivalent, and includes a new five-year operations and maintenance contract with BW Offshore; this deal aligns with 2025 capital expenditures of $1.135 billion to $1.285 million, emphasizing offshore development, exploration wells in Vietnam and the Gulf of Mexico, and debt reduction.
