Business
National Grid plc operates as a leading electricity and gas utility company primarily engaged in the transmission and distribution of energy across the United Kingdom and the northeastern United States. Founded in 1990 and headquartered in London, United Kingdom, National Grid focuses on delivering high-voltage electricity transmission; high-pressure gas transmission; local electricity and gas distribution networks serving residential, commercial, and industrial customers; and operates high-voltage direct current interconnectors between the UK and neighboring European countries. The company’s portfolio includes electricity transmission and distribution networks, gas transmission and distribution systems, energy interconnectors, and ancillary services related to network management. National Grid also undertakes leasing and sale of commercial property and insurance activities in the UK. Recent major changes include the £7.8 billion acquisition of Western Power Distribution in 2021, which expanded its electricity distribution footprint in the UK covering regions such as the South West, South Wales, and the Midlands. Concurrently, National Grid divested its Rhode Island gas and electricity network and initiated the sale of a majority stake in its UK gas transmission and metering business to refocus on electricity networks. In 2025, the company announced a strategic shift emphasizing a pure-play networks model, committing approximately £60 billion of investment from 2024 to 2029 to modernize and expand its networks, doubling previous investment levels. Key projects include the "Great Grid Upgrade" to support renewable energy integration, the Viking Link interconnector to Denmark, and a $4 billion transmission enhancement program in Upstate New York aimed at creating a stronger, cleaner energy network. Additionally, National Grid agreed to sell its Grain liquefied natural gas business to Centrica and Energy Capital Partners for £1.5 billion, signaling a strategic retreat from LNG assets. The company is also advancing infrastructure projects to increase capacity to connect offshore wind and other renewables with ongoing development of HVDC supply chain frameworks and AI investment initiatives in energy technology innovation. National Grid’s operations and investments align with its commitment to net-zero emissions by 2050, focusing on clean energy transition, grid modernization, and expanded capacity to meet increasing renewable energy demands. It is actively engaged with regulators and industry partners to shape policy and investment frameworks supporting sustainable energy infrastructure. The company employs approximately 31,600 people, led by CEO John Pettigrew, and serves millions of customers through its integrated energy networks, positioning itself as a pivotal player in the UK and US energy markets.
