Business
Noranda Aluminum Holding Corporation, headquartered in Franklin, Tennessee and founded in 2007, produces and sells primary aluminum, alumina, bauxite, and rolled aluminum coils primarily in the United States; its operations span bauxite mining in Jamaica, alumina refining in Gramercy, Louisiana, primary aluminum smelting near New Madrid, Missouri, and flat-rolled products from multiple rolling mills across North America. The Bauxite segment mines, produces, and sells bauxite for alumina production; the Alumina segment refines bauxite into smelter-grade and chemical-grade alumina; the Primary Aluminum segment manufactures billets, rods, sows, foundry products, and commodity-grade sows for construction, architectural, transportation, and electrical applications; the Flat-Rolled Products segment supplies finstock for air conditioners, container stock for packaging, converter foils for food and industrial uses, and transformer windings to original equipment manufacturers. Targeting markets in building, automotive, food packaging, and energy sectors, the company operates through upstream and downstream businesses with approximately 2,200 employees. Following its Chapter 11 bankruptcy filing in February 2016 due to low aluminum prices and operational disruptions, Noranda sold its alumina and bauxite assets to New Day Aluminum LLC in late 2016 for approximately $24.4 million and its flat-rolled aluminum business to Gränges AB, with the bankruptcy case dismissed in November 2016; its common stock trades on OTC markets under NORNQ at near-zero value with no reported major operational changes, partnerships, funding, or new product launches since 2016.
