Business
Nippon Steel Corporation engages in the manufacture and sale of a broad range of steel products, including steel plates, steel sheets, bars and wire rods under the SteeLinC brand, structural steel, pipes and tubes, railway products, automotive and machinery parts, titanium, and stainless steel; it also provides engineering and construction services for steelmaking facilities, environmental and energy plants, skyscrapers, and large steel structures through Nippon Steel Engineering Co., Ltd., alongside chemicals and materials such as coal chemicals, carbon materials, and epoxy resins via Nippon Steel Chemical & Material Co., Ltd., and system solutions including IT infrastructure for manufacturing, finance, distribution, and public sectors through NS Solutions Corporation. The company operates across the upstream and downstream of the steel industry value chain, with domestic steelmaking centered in Japan and overseas activities encompassing steel fabrication, raw materials procurement, functional steel trading, secondary processing, stainless steel production, and electric arc furnace operations. Founded in 1970 and headquartered at 2-6-1 Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo 100-8071, Japan, Nippon Steel maintains a global crude steel production capacity of 86 million tons, approximately 530 group companies, and around 136,000 employees, serving industries such as automotive, construction, energy, and infrastructure primarily in Japan, Asia, North America, and other international markets. In a significant strategic expansion, Nippon Steel completed its $14.9 billion acquisition of U.S. Steel Corporation on June 18, 2025, under a National Security Agreement with the U.S. Department of Treasury, following President Trump's June 13, 2025 Executive Order that permitted the transaction after it had been blocked earlier in the year; the deal positions U.S. Steel as a wholly owned subsidiary retaining its Pittsburgh headquarters, with Nippon Steel committing approximately $11 billion in new U.S. investments by 2028, including a greenfield steel mill project, while granting the U.S. government a "golden share" for oversight on key decisions involving production, trade, labor, facility closures, and acquisitions. This acquisition enhances Nippon Steel's North American presence and integrates U.S. Steel's operations into its global portfolio, supporting commitments to domestic production, job preservation aligned with United Steelworkers agreements, and advanced steel manufacturing capabilities. Additionally, in 2025, the company executed a joint venture agreement with Nakayama Steel Works, Ltd., further bolstering its steel fabrication and processing network.
