- GAIL (India) Limited is an integrated natural gas company primarily engaged in the processing, transmission, and distribution of natural gas in India and internationally. The company manufactures and markets natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), and petrochemical products including polymers such as high-density polyethylene (HDPE), linear low-density polyethylene (LLDPE), and polypropylene (PP). GAIL operates extensive pipeline infrastructure comprising over 11,500 km of natural gas pipelines and more than 2,300 km of LPG pipelines, along with six LPG gas-processing units and petrochemical plants. The company also has a presence in city gas distribution, liquefied natural gas (LNG) sourcing, shipping, regasification, upstream exploration and production, renewable energy initiatives including green hydrogen production, and petrochemical trading. It holds joint-venture interests in Petronet LNG Ltd, Ratnagiri Gas and Power Pvt Ltd, and has subsidiaries in Singapore and the US focusing on LNG, petrochemical trading, and shale gas assets. Founded in 1984, GAIL is headquartered in New Delhi and is a Maharatna Central Public Sector Enterprise under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India.
Recent major developments include GAIL's commissioning of two new polypropylene plants with a combined capacity of 560,000 tons per year expected by mid-2025, expanding its petrochemical production capabilities. The company has also initiated a 4.3 tons per day PEM electrolyzer project for green hydrogen production in Madhya Pradesh, advancing its renewable energy portfolio. In 2024, GAIL signed a 10-year LNG sales and purchase agreement with ADNOC Gas to supply up to 0.52 million tons per annum of LNG, strengthening its LNG portfolio. Furthermore, GAIL inked a Memorandum of Understanding with AM Green B.V. focusing on developing renewable solar/wind hybrid projects and eMethanol production in India, supporting decarbonization efforts. The company expanded its bioenergy footprint through acquisition and investment agreements, including a recent 49% equity acquisition in Leafiniti Bioenergy Private Limited for Compressed Bio Gas projects. GAIL also collaborates with Oil India to expand natural gas access and support cleaner energy solutions in India.
These strategic moves reflect GAIL’s emphasis on broadening its energy mix beyond natural gas into renewables and eco-friendly fuels, continuing its leadership in India’s energy sector while expanding its footprint domestically and internationally.
