Business
Universal Display Corporation (Nasdaq: OLED) develops, licenses, and commercializes organic light emitting diode (OLED) technologies and materials principally for display and lighting applications. The company provides proprietary phosphorescent OLED (UniversalPHOLED) emitter materials systems, including red, green, yellow, and blue emitters that enable high-efficiency, vibrant displays; licenses a portfolio of over 6,000 issued and pending patents worldwide covering PHOLED technologies, device architectures, and manufacturing processes; and offers contract research services such as Organic Vapor Jet Printing (OVJP) for next-generation OLED deposition. Its technologies and materials are supplied to leading manufacturers including Samsung Display, LG Display, AU Optronics, and others for use in smartphones, tablets, wearables, televisions, laptops, automotive displays, and solid-state lighting products. Founded in 1994 and headquartered in Ewing, New Jersey, U.S., Universal Display operates international offices in China, Hong Kong, Ireland, Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan, with a wholly-owned subsidiary Adesis, Inc. in New Castle, Delaware. The company targets display panel makers and lighting manufacturers in the consumer electronics, automotive, and general illumination segments, generating revenue primarily through high-margin material sales and licensing fees. In recent developments, Universal Display announced a definitive agreement in November 2025 to acquire emissive OLED patent assets from Merck KGaA, Darmstadt, Germany, for $50 million, expected to close in January 2026, to accelerate next-generation high-efficiency device roadmaps. The company is negotiating a new long-term contract with LG Display, a partner for over 15 years, and continues its 25-year collaboration with PPG Industries for phosphorescent OLED material scaling. These strategic moves complement ongoing innovations in phosphorescent blue technology and expansions into IT and foldable smartphone markets amid a competitive OLED landscape.
