Business
Panacos Pharmaceuticals, Inc. was a biotechnology enterprise dedicated to identifying and advancing small-molecule oral therapies for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and other viral infections. The firm’s research efforts targeted critical stages within the viral life cycle, specifically focusing on mechanisms such as virus maturation and fusion. Its pipeline included innovative programs aimed at inhibiting HIV maturation, with a lead candidate, bevirimat (PA-457), demonstrating activity against drug-resistant HIV strains. Initially established in 1999 and based in Watertown, Massachusetts, the company later underwent a reverse merger with V.I. Technologies in 2005, which then assumed the Panacos name and ticker PANC. Despite promising clinical trial results for its primary compound, Panacos Pharmaceuticals ultimately delisted from Nasdaq and ceased independent operations in early 2009, with its HIV drug development programs subsequently acquired by Myriad Pharmaceuticals.
