Business
Poniard Pharmaceuticals, Inc. was a biopharmaceutical firm dedicated to the research and commercialization of therapies for cancer. Its primary development candidate was Picoplatin, an advanced platinum-based antineoplastic agent designed to address various solid tumor types, including small cell lung, colorectal, prostate, and ovarian cancers. The company advanced Picoplatin into a pivotal Phase III SPEAR trial for second-line small cell lung cancer treatment. Additionally, Poniard conducted Phase II evaluations of Picoplatin for metastatic colorectal cancer and castration-resistant prostate cancer as a first-line therapy, along with a Phase I study exploring an oral formulation for solid tumors. Despite demonstrating promising early activity across several indications, the Phase III SPEAR study did not achieve its primary endpoint in small cell lung cancer. This outcome led the company to reassess its development strategy and explore various strategic options, including a sale. Originally known as NeoRx Corporation, the company adopted the Poniard Pharmaceuticals, Inc. name in September 2006. Poniard Pharmaceuticals, founded in 1984, was based in Seattle, Washington. In 2011, Poniard entered into a merger agreement with Allozyne, Inc., aiming to bring Allozyne public, but this transaction was ultimately terminated due to the combined entity not meeting Nasdaq listing requirements. Following the failed merger, Poniard Pharmaceuticals was delisted from Nasdaq in early 2012, with its stock subsequently moving to the OTCQB Marketplace, and the company ceased active operations as a biopharmaceutical developer.
