Quarterhill Inc. operates globally across the intelligent transportation system sector and in intellectual property monetization. Its Intellectual Property segment, primarily through its WiLAN subsidiary, concentrates on acquiring and licensing technology patents spanning areas such as wireless communication, memory interface, semiconductor fabrication and packaging, wired connectivity, automotive applications, and advanced image processing technologies. The company’s Intelligent Transportation Systems division delivers comprehensive products and services for modern road infrastructure. These offerings include advanced electronic tolling solutions, dynamic pricing mechanisms, interoperability between agencies, and back-office functionalities for account management, customer support, and violation processing. It also provides robust roadside maintenance and lane equipment control services. Furthermore, this segment specializes in critical safety and enforcement systems, such as automated truck weigh stations, systems for red light and speed violation detection, and comprehensive traffic management. Key proprietary technologies include the VectorSense tire sensor suite, Automatic Vehicle Detection and Classification (AVDC) systems utilizing various sensor technologies like in-road sensors, inductive loops, and LiDAR, along with the Vehicle Information-In-Motion traffic intelligence system. The ITS segment additionally offers integrated traffic control, permanent and portable weigh-in-motion setups, portable wheel load scales, and various hardware and software products for comprehensive traffic data collection and logistics solutions. Serving government entities, toll authorities, and commercial transport companies, this segment expands its reach through direct sales, distributors, agents, and system integrators. Formerly known as Wi-LAN Inc., the company adopted the name Quarterhill Inc. in June 2017 to reflect its strategic diversification. Established in 1992, Quarterhill Inc. maintains its corporate headquarters in Toronto, Canada.
