Business
Rubis is an independent French energy group founded in 1990 and headquartered in Paris, specializing in the storage, distribution, and sale of petroleum products, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), bitumen, lubricants, and renewable electricity production. The company operates through two main segments: Energy Distribution, which includes service station networks, retail fuels, commercial fuel oil, aviation fuel, LPG sold under brands such as Vitogaz and Rubigas, and bitumen; and Renewable Electricity Production, mainly through photovoltaic electricity generation. Rubis also provides logistics services including trading, supply, refining, and shipping. Its operations span over 40 countries, mainly in Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean, serving both individual consumers and professional sectors including transportation, aviation, marine, and public works. Rubis offers additional services at its service stations such as car wash, local shops, catering, and payment cards to meet consumer mobility needs. The company owns several subsidiaries including Rubis Énergie and until recently Rubis Terminal, which focused on bulk liquid storage for petroleum, chemical, and food products. In 2024, Rubis completed the sale of its 55% stake in Rubis Terminal to I Squared Capital as part of its strategic shift to focus more on energy distribution and renewable energy. Recent major changes include the disposal of the Rubis Terminal stake finalized in October 2024, marking a significant operational change. The company is accelerating its growth ambitions in energy distribution under new management leadership appointed in late 2024 and planned for 2025, with Jean-Christian Bergeron named CEO of Rubis Énergie to lead retail network expansion. Rubis also continues investing in renewable energy projects, including developments in French Guiana and Barbados within its Renewable Electricity Production segment, reflecting its strategic diversification into lower-carbon energy solutions. Rubis maintains a strong presence in the Caribbean through acquisitions such as Chevron’s assets in 13 countries, bolstering its retail fuel and LPG market share. The company also markets lubricants, primarily under the Castrol brand, in markets such as Kenya. Rubis focuses on safety, environmental standards, and operational efficiency across its geographically diverse portfolio, striving to provide reliable and sustainable energy solutions globally. Overall, Rubis stands as a leading downstream energy operator combining traditional petroleum product distribution with growing investments in renewable electricity, supported by a comprehensive logistics, retail, and services ecosystem across Europe, Africa, and the Caribbean. Its recent strategic divestment and leadership renewal underscore its commitment to growth and sustainable energy transition.
