Business
Renewable Energy Group, Inc. engages in the production and distribution of lower-carbon transportation fuels primarily in the United States and internationally. It manufactures and sells bio-based diesel products derived from various low-carbon feedstocks, including distillers corn oil, used cooking oil, inedible animal fats, soybean oil, and canola oil. Its core product offerings include biodiesel, renewable diesel, renewable identification numbers, California low carbon fuel standard credits, and blended renewable diesel products. The company also provides feedstock sourcing, biofuel blending, logistics, operational management services for bio-based diesel facilities, and construction management for renewable diesel production plants. Its solutions serve a broad range of industries such as agriculture, aviation, construction, heating and power generation, mining, marine, railroad, and trucking. Founded in 1996 and headquartered in Ames, Iowa, Renewable Energy Group operates with an additional office in Amsterdam and functions as a subsidiary of Chevron Corporation. A major recent development for Renewable Energy Group is its acquisition by Chevron Corporation in 2022 in an all-cash transaction valued at $3.15 billion, which integrated REG’s renewable fuels production capabilities and feedstock resources into Chevron’s larger manufacturing, distribution, and marketing network. Post-acquisition, REG remains headquartered in Ames, Iowa and is advancing capacity expansion projects including a significant upgrade to its Geismar, Louisiana renewable diesel refinery aiming to increase production by 250 million gallons annually by 2024. This strategic move supports Chevron’s target to scale its renewable fuels production capacity to 100,000 barrels per day by 2030. Chevron has also utilized REG’s expertise to enhance the integration of renewable fuels across diverse markets and transportation sectors. In 2025, Chevron’s Renewable Energy Group continues to develop a portfolio spanning biodiesel, renewable diesel, fuel blends, renewable compressed natural gas, and hydrogen to aid lower carbon transitions for fleets and industrial customers. Workforce adjustments have occurred recently at the headquarters, reflecting operational efficiencies under Chevron’s ownership. The company positions itself as a leading integrated provider of sustainable fuels leveraging innovation and strategic partnerships to meet evolving market demands.
