Business
Railpower Technologies Corp. (Ticker: RLPHQ) Railpower Technologies Corp. designs, manufactures and markets hybrid and low-emission locomotives for yard switching, shortline railroads and port operations primarily in North America. The company offers Green Goat hybrid switchers including the GG20B and GG10B models that combine battery power with compact diesel engines for fuel efficiency and reduced emissions; GK10B smaller hybrids; and RP-series genset locomotives such as the RP20BD with three engines, RP14BD with two engines, RP20CD and RP28CD six-axle units powered by multiple Deutz or Cummins engines that selectively activate to optimize performance and cut fuel use by 25-55%. Founded in 2001 and headquartered in Brossard, Quebec, with prior manufacturing in Saint-Jean-sur-Richelieu, Quebec, and Erie, Pennsylvania, Railpower pioneered these technologies to meet EPA standards and environmental regulations in regions like California and Texas. In February 2025, Sierra Northern Railway acquired Railpower's assets to integrate its hybrid platforms with hydrogen fuel cell technology, building on Sierra Northern's SERA 193 four-axle hydrogen switcher prototype funded by the California Energy Commission and a $15.6 million California State Transportation Agency grant; the company now develops zero-emission hydrogen locomotives targeting California's 260 shortline units and plans commercial offerings industry-wide. Previously a subsidiary of R.J. Corman Railroad Group following a 2009 asset purchase from bankruptcy, Railpower operates through partnerships with entities like Ballard Power Systems and focuses on next-generation clean rail solutions.
