Business
Rolls-Royce Holdings plc is a British multinational industrial technology company specializing in the design, manufacture, and distribution of advanced power and propulsion systems for aerospace, defense, marine, and energy sectors. The company operates through five customer-facing segments: Civil Aerospace, Defence Aerospace, Power Systems, Marine, and Nuclear. Its Civil Aerospace segment develops and services aero engines for large commercial aircraft, regional jets, and business aviation markets, while providing aftermarket services globally. The Defence segment manufactures military aero engines, naval engines, and submarine nuclear power plants, as well as offering maintenance and aftermarket services. The Power Systems segment produces integrated power and propulsion solutions for marine, defense, and power generation applications, marketed under the mtu brand. The Marine segment supplies propulsion equipment, integrated systems, and deck machinery, including complete ship design capabilities. The Nuclear segment focuses on the development and sale of small modular reactors (SMRs) and nuclear power systems, serving emerging energy markets. Rolls-Royce Holdings also provides gas turbines and engines for industrial applications such as oil and gas and power generation. The company was founded in 1884 and is headquartered in London, United Kingdom. Recent major developments include the strategic partnership with ČEZ Group, which became a shareholder in Rolls-Royce SMR and committed to purchasing up to six small modular reactors, supporting the company's expansion into nuclear energy. In 2025, Rolls-Royce SMR was selected as the sole provider in the UK government's Great British Energy - Nuclear competition to build three SMR units, with the first expected to connect to the grid by the mid-2030s. Rolls-Royce also completed a £4.3 billion bulk annuity buy-in with Pension Insurance Corp. to secure pension fund liabilities. The company’s large engine order book grew by 12% at mid-2025, with significant new orders from airlines like Riyadh Air, Vietjet Air, STARLUX, and AviLease. Additionally, Rolls-Royce has recently divested non-core businesses such as its Naval Propulsors & Handling business to focus on core operations. Rolls-Royce Holdings plc continues to strengthen its position as a leading global supplier of mission-critical power systems with a strong emphasis on innovation, sustainability, and expansion in emerging sectors such as nuclear energy through small modular reactors and green power solutions. It maintains operations worldwide, serving commercial and military customers across multiple continents through a broad portfolio of engines, power systems, and propulsion technologies. Its subsidiaries include Aerospace Transmission Technologies GmbH and PT Rolls-Royce, among others. The company remains a significant player in aerospace, defense, marine, and energy markets, focusing on integrated power solutions for safety-critical applications across air, sea, and land.
