Business
Rayonier Inc. (NYSE: RYN) operates as a leading timberland real estate investment trust (REIT) focused on the sustainable management, harvesting, and sale of timber from its approximately 2.5 million acres of productive softwood timberlands primarily in the U.S. South, U.S. Pacific Northwest, and formerly New Zealand; it also pursues land resources opportunities including recreational leasing for hunting, fishing, and other activities, minor forest products such as pine straw, palmetto berries, and fill dirt, minerals extraction like sand, gravel, and oil and gas, and alternative energy projects encompassing solar farms, wind, and biomass facilities; through its taxable REIT subsidiary Raydient Places + Properties, the company develops and sells real estate for community needs including residential, commercial, and conservation uses. Founded in 1926 as Rainier Pulp and Paper Company in Shelton, Washington, Rayonier is headquartered in Wildlight, Florida, and serves industrial customers such as pulp and paper mills, lumber manufacturers, and composite panel producers, as well as recreational users, developers, conservation groups, and energy companies across its target markets in the United States. In recent developments, Rayonier completed the sale of its 77% interest in the New Zealand joint venture to The Rohatyn Group in June 2025 for $710 million, yielding net proceeds of approximately $699 million to support deleveraging, share repurchases, and opportunistic reinvestments; the company has executed about $1.45 billion in dispositions since November 2023 as part of its asset disposition and capital structure realignment plan; additionally, in October 2025, Rayonier agreed to merge with PotlatchDeltic in an all-stock transaction valued at $8.2 billion, expected to close in late Q1 or early Q2 2026, creating a premier North American timber and wood products REIT managing 4.2 million acres across 11 U.S. states with seven wood manufacturing facilities, $40 million in anticipated annual synergies, and enhanced focus on utility solar, carbon capture, minerals, and voluntary carbon markets.
