Business
Starbucks Corporation Starbucks Corporation (SBUX) operates as a leading multinational roaster, marketer, and retailer of specialty coffee worldwide through its company-operated stores, licensed stores, grocery channels, and foodservice accounts. The company offers a wide range of beverages including hot and cold coffee drinks such as espresso, caffe latte, Frappuccino blended beverages, and cold brews; tea beverages including full and loose-leaf teas under the Teavana brand; ready-to-drink products; and non-coffee options like juices, iced refreshers, and energy drinks such as Baya; alongside food items encompassing pastries, breakfast sandwiches, lunch offerings, bakery products, and snacks; as well as packaged goods like whole-bean coffees, ground coffees, single-serve products, and merchandise including mugs and tumblers under brands such as Starbucks, Starbucks Reserve, Seattle's Best Coffee, Evolution Fresh, Ethos, and Princi. Starbucks Corporation divides its operations into three segments—North America, International, and Channel Development—serving diverse customer bases from urban professionals to everyday consumers across more than 80 countries, with a significant presence in the United States (over 15,000 stores), China (nearly 7,000 stores), Japan, South Korea, the United Kingdom, and other regions in Asia, Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and Africa. Founded in 1971 and headquartered in Seattle, Washington, the company maintains a global network of over 36,000 stores as of 2024. Recent developments include the 2024 acquisition of its largest UK franchisee, 23.5 Degrees, adding approximately 113 stores to expand its company-operated footprint to nearly 500 locations in the UK; the formation of a joint venture with Boyu Capital in 2025 for its China operations, where Boyu holds up to 60% interest in over 8,000 outlets with ambitions to grow to 20,000 stores; acquisitions of coffee farms in Guatemala and Costa Rica to advance sustainability and innovation; a $1 billion restructuring plan announced in 2025 focused on North American store portfolio optimization, closures, renovations, and enhanced customer experience under the "Back to Starbucks" initiative amid declining same-store sales; menu simplification by cutting 30% of items including certain Frappuccinos in February 2025; discontinuation of Oleato olive oil-infused drinks in November 2024; and implementation of a purchase-required policy for restrooms and seating along with a return-to-office mandate for corporate employees.
