Business
SK Telecom Co., Ltd. (SKM) operates as South Korea's largest wireless telecommunications carrier, providing integrated mobile and fixed-line services, AI-driven solutions, and ICT convergence offerings to individual consumers, enterprises, and government sectors primarily in South Korea with select international operations. Founded in 1984 as Korea Mobile Telecommunications Services Corp. and headquartered at 65 Eulji-ro, Jung-gu, Seoul, the company delivers core products and services across three main segments: cellular services encompassing 5G and LTE wireless voice and data transmission, Internet of Things (IoT) solutions, platform and cloud services, smart factory solutions, subscription services under the T Deal brand, advertising and curated shopping, metaverse platforms like ifland, AI solutions including enterprise AI services, and sales of wireless devices; fixed-line telecommunications services including fixed-line telephone, broadband Internet, media platforms such as Internet Protocol Television (IPTV) and cable TV via B tv and Wavve over-the-top video streaming, and business communications; and other businesses featuring T-commerce, portal services under the Nate brand, call center management, base station maintenance, international telecommunications via SK Telink, and digital content services. SK Telecom maintains advanced network infrastructure supporting 2G CDMA, 3G UMTS, 4G LTE across multiple frequency bands, WiMAX, and nationwide 5G NR on the n78 band, alongside complementary offerings in digital home controls, mobile RFID, music streaming via MelOn, and enterprise solutions like data analytics and security services. In recent developments, SK Telecom advances its AI pyramid strategy through strategic partnerships and expansions, including a comprehensive procurement agreement with Schneider Electric signed in 2025 for mechanical, electrical, and plumbing equipment to support the construction of its AI data center (AIDC) in Ulsan, marking the first outcome of their Mobile World Congress collaboration and aiming for gigawatt-scale capacity with group-wide synergies; an MoU with Japan's TimeTree in September 2025 to lead the AI agent market across Korea and Japan; a partnership with Aduna via subsidiary SK Telink in September 2025 to expand the global network API ecosystem using CAMARA standards; a November 2025 MoU with Samsung Electronics to jointly develop 6G core technologies focused on AI-RAN including channel estimation and distributed MIMO; and an MoU with OpenAI as part of SK Group's Stargate Korea initiative for AI infrastructure in southwestern Korea, alongside securing AIDC hubs in three major regions following an October 2025 southwestern MoU. These initiatives build on prior efforts like the 2021 spin-off of SK Square for investments in semiconductors, media, and ICT, while addressing a significant 2021-2025 cybersecurity breach involving USIM data leaks that prompted free replacements for 23 million subscribers and a 134.8 billion won fine in August 2025.
