The Southern Company The Southern Company (NYSE: SO), through its subsidiaries, engages in the generation, transmission, distribution, and sale of electricity and natural gas across the southeastern United States. The company operates through traditional electric utilities including Alabama Power, Georgia Power, and Mississippi Power, which serve approximately 9 million customers with a diverse energy mix encompassing carbon-free nuclear power from facilities such as Plant Vogtle Units 3 and 4, natural gas, coal, hydro, solar, wind, and battery storage; Southern Power, a competitive wholesale generator developing and managing renewable energy projects nationwide; Southern Company Gas, distributing natural gas in Illinois, Georgia, Virginia, and Tennessee via subsidiaries like Atlanta Gas Light, Chattanooga Gas, and Nicor Gas, alongside gas marketing services; and additional offerings in distributed energy solutions, microgrids, fiber optics, and digital wireless communications through entities like PowerSecure, Southern Telecom, and Southern Linc.
