Business
SpartanNash Company (SPTN) operates as a food solutions company focused on wholesale distribution, retailing, and related services, distributing grocery and household goods including fresh produce, dry grocery, meat, frozen foods, dairy, bakery items, and its proprietary Our Family portfolio of private label products to independent grocers, national accounts, chain retailers, e-commerce platforms, U.S. military commissaries and exchanges worldwide, and its own brick-and-mortar supermarkets, pharmacies, and fuel centers with convenience stores. The company provides value-added services such as asset protection, financial services, food safety, marketing, pharmacy solutions, retail support, and supply chain management; it maintains a network of 18 distribution centers across the U.S. and a nationwide transportation fleet to serve customer locations in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Europe, Cuba, Puerto Rico, Honduras, Iraq, Kuwait, Bahrain, Qatar, Djibouti, and Korea. SpartanNash operates nearly 200 corporate-owned supermarkets primarily under the Family Fare, Martin's Super Markets, and D&W Fresh Market banners, concentrated in the Midwestern United States, along with select Hispanic-focused stores under Supermercado Nuestra Familia. Founded in 1917 as a cooperative wholesaler in Grand Rapids, Michigan, and headquartered in Byron Center, Michigan, the company emerged in its current form from the 2013 merger of Spartan Stores and Nash Finch Company, expanding its military distribution and retail capabilities. In recent developments, SpartanNash completed acquisitions of independent grocer chains including Fresh Encounter in March 2025, which expanded its retail footprint by 33% into Kentucky, Ohio, and Indiana with over 2,500 new associates, and Metcalfe's Market earlier in 2024, alongside Great Lakes Foods and Shop-N-Save Food Centers to bolster wholesale density. The company pursued growth in private label sales targeting $1 billion revenue increase by 2025 through 1,000 new Our Family products and 20% brand penetration growth, expanded partnerships like Coastal Pacific for West Coast reach, and consolidated retail banners to four core formats. Most notably, in September 2025, C&S Wholesale Grocers completed its $1.77 billion acquisition of SpartanNash, integrating its operations into nearly 60 distribution centers serving 10,000 retail locations, enhancing C&S's market share to 23% while incorporating SpartanNash's military supply chain and 200-plus supermarkets under Piggly Wiggly and Grand Union alongside existing banners; former CEO Tony Sarsam serves as a transition advisor.
