Business
Santos Limited is an Australian energy company engaged in the exploration, development, production, transportation, and marketing of hydrocarbons. Its core products and services include crude oil, liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), ethane, liquefied natural gas (LNG), condensate, and natural gas. The company operates mainly in Australia, Papua New Guinea, Timor-Leste, and the United States. It also focuses on developing decarbonization technologies to support energy transition. Santos’ upstream assets are located across key basins such as Cooper Basin, Queensland, Northern Australia, Western Australia, Alaska, and Papua New Guinea. It targets diverse markets including domestic energy supply and exports to Asian markets, supported by long-term LNG supply agreements with companies like Hokkaido Gas and Shizuoka Gas, alongside mid-term agreements with TotalEnergies and Glencore. Founded in 1954 and headquartered in Adelaide, Australia, Santos also emphasizes sustainable production growth and infrastructure optimization. In the last two years, Santos has undergone significant operational and strategic changes. In 2025, it received a non-binding acquisition proposal from the XRG Consortium, led by Abu Dhabi’s National Oil Company (ADNOC) subsidiary and including ADQ and Carlyle, aimed at creating a leading global integrated gas and LNG business; however, this proposal was withdrawn later in the year. Santos demonstrated ongoing strong cash flow generation with $1.9 billion free cash flow in 2024 and reported net profit after tax of $1.2 billion. The company completed phase one of the Moomba Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) project and advanced its Barossa LNG project to over 91 percent completion. It also signed new LNG supply and purchase agreements and pursued production growth with plans to increase output by 16 percent by 2028. In 2024, Santos’ sales revenue reached approximately $9.4 billion. Recent operational highlights include successful project start-ups and contracts that strengthen its position in the LNG market while supporting energy security in Asia-Pacific and beyond. Santos’ ongoing portfolio includes oil and gas extraction, LNG production and marketing, and investments in carbon capture technologies, positioning the company as a substantial player in the energy, oil, and gas industry within Australia and internationally across Asia-Pacific and the Americas. It maintains a strong focus on sustainable, reliable, and affordable energy supply while pursuing business expansions and partnerships to adapt to the evolving low-carbon energy landscape.
