Business
Tekna Holding ASA is an advanced materials and plasma technology company that specializes in the development, manufacturing, and commercialization of high-purity spherical metal powders and inductively coupled plasma (ICP) systems for industrial applications. Founded in 1990 and headquartered in Oslo, Norway, with primary operational headquarters and manufacturing infrastructure located in Sherbrooke, Quebec, Canada, the company operates as a subsidiary of Arendals Fossekompani ASA and maintains commercial and technical operations across North America, Europe, and Asia. The company operates primarily through two core business segments: Advanced Materials and Plasma Systems. In its Advanced Materials division, Tekna manufactures high-performance, spherical micro- and nano-powders engineered for additive manufacturing (3D printing), metal injection molding (MIM), hot isostatic pressing (HIP), and thermal spray applications. Its materials portfolio includes titanium and titanium alloy powders, such as Ti-6Al-4V Grade 5 and Grade 23, Ti-6242, and commercially pure titanium; nickel-based superalloys, including Inconel 718 and Inconel 625; refractory and specialty metals, including tantalum, tungsten, and molybdenum; aluminum alloys; copper and copper alloys; and proprietary nano-powders, including nano-nickel for multi-layer ceramic capacitors (MLCC) and silicon-based nano-materials developed for high-energy-density lithium-ion battery anodes. In its Plasma Systems division, the company designs, engineers, and supplies turnkey industrial and laboratory-scale induction plasma equipment utilizing its proprietary plasma torch technology. Its systems portfolio includes plasma spheroidization reactors, such as the TekSphero series, for transforming irregularly shaped powders into highly spherical powders; plasma atomization systems for fine metal powder production; TekPlas deposition and synthesis reactors; and high-enthalpy plasma wind tunnels utilized for hypersonic aerospace testing and materials qualification under extreme thermal conditions. In addition to equipment and materials sales, the company provides toll processing and contract manufacturing services, customized metallurgical testing, engineering consulting, process scale-up support, and after-sales maintenance and spare parts supply. Tekna serves a globally diversified industrial customer base spanning the aerospace, defense, medical device, microelectronics, consumer electronics, automotive, and energy storage sectors. The company operates production and research facilities in Canada and France, supported by sales offices, application centers, and distribution networks in the United States, China, South Korea, and Japan. In recent operational and strategic developments, Tekna has expanded its industrial production capacity by commissioning additional high-output plasma atomizers to meet accelerating demand for titanium and specialty alloy powders in aerospace and defense applications. The company has secured several multi-year commercial supply contracts and qualification agreements with global aerospace tier-1 suppliers and medical implant manufacturers. Tekna has also advanced the commercialization of its proprietary silicon nano-material technology for lithium-ion battery anodes through joint evaluation agreements with major battery producers and automotive original equipment manufacturers. To enhance operational resilience and support ongoing capacity expansions, the company has implemented structured cost-efficiency and productivity programs across its Canadian and European operations, backed by equity financing rounds and continued capital commitments from its parent company, Arendals Fossekompani.
