Business
HMS Bergbau AG is a Germany-based independent commodities trading company specializing in the international purchase, sale, and logistics of raw materials and energy products for industrial customers. Founded in 1995 and headquartered in Berlin, the company focuses on trading coal products including steam coal, coking coal, coke, anthracite, and pulverized coal injection (PCI) coal; biomass products such as wood pellets and wood chips; metal ores including iron lumps and iron fines; as well as cement and other bulk commodities. HMS Bergbau AG ensures reliable just-in-time deliveries supported by comprehensive logistics services including sea, inland, rail, and truck transport. It also provides consulting services related to power plants, ports, mine operations, and logistics optimization. Geographically, HMS operates across Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Asia, and South America, maintaining strong relationships with leading raw material consumers and energy producers. The company has expanded its business scope recently to include commodity production and integrated logistical solutions, illustrating its strategy to evolve into a vertically integrated raw materials trading group. In the latest strategic development, HMS Bergbau AG has diversified into global marine fuel and lubricants trading, adding very low sulfur fuel oil (VLSFO), marine gas oil (MGO), biofuels, LNG, LPG, ammonia, and methanol to its product portfolio. This expansion is supported by acquiring a specialized team and establishing operations in key global locations, particularly in Asia and South America. The company also successfully increased its 2025/2030 corporate bond by EUR 20 million to finance the expansion of its trading business and further growth in the liquid fuels segment. Additionally, the company holds a majority stake in Maatla Resources in Botswana, enabling upstream activities with coal deposits to secure global marketing rights and deepen its value chain. HMS Bergbau AG serves energy producers, cement and steel industries, and other industrial customers globally, positioning itself as a comprehensive raw materials service provider with a broad and growing portfolio in commodities trading, production, and sustainable growth opportunities. The firm continues to enhance margins and sales through proactive internationalization and diversification strategies.
