Business
Central Japan Railway Company (JR Central) operates as a leading rail transport provider primarily in Japan, with a core focus on the Tokaido Shinkansen, the high-speed rail line connecting Tokyo, Nagoya, and Osaka. Its main products and services include high-speed rail passenger transportation via the Nozomi, Hikari, and Kodama trains; conventional regional rail lines such as the Chuo Main Line and Takayama Main Line; freight rail services; and ancillary businesses including station retail, food services, and tourism-related offerings. Headquartered in Nagoya and founded in 1987 as part of Japan Railways Group privatization, JR Central covers approximately 1,000 kilometers of track, serving millions of passengers annually. Recent strategic developments include a partnership with JTB to launch the same-day baggage delivery service "LUGGAGE EXPRESS" to enable hands-free travel on the Tokaido Shinkansen; ongoing development of a hydrogen engine hybrid system and establishment of a hydrogen supply chain aiming at carbon neutrality; issuance of green bonds to finance environmentally sustainable initiatives; expansion of reserved seating on its Shinkansen services; and implementation of private booths on trains for enhanced passenger comfort. These moves reflect JR Central's efforts to enhance customer experience, expand environmentally friendly technology adoption, and maintain its leadership in the high-speed rail industry in Japan and beyond. The company continues investing in safety improvement technologies, including image recognition support systems and advanced insulator equipment. Its operations extend through major urban and regional centers in central Japan, serving primarily commuter, business, and leisure travelers. JR Central is recognized as Japan’s most profitable and highest throughput high-speed rail operator, committed to sustainable growth and innovation within its transport and related services portfolio.
